san jose state university’s WOmen’s rugby club

SJSU Women’s Rugby Club is a student-led team that welcomes players of all skill levels, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. As the Media Marketing Manager (2022-2023), I led the club’s marketing efforts, combining graphic design and social media management to enhance recruitment and community engagement.

In my first year with the team (2021-2022), I assisted the previous Media Marketing Manager by creating social media posts, updating the team website with up-to-date information, and sharing rugby-related content.

In my second year (2022-2023), I officially took over the media position, expanding the club’s visibility and engagement. My primary objectives were to increase the club’s presence on campus, attract new members, and drive social media interaction through strategic promotional materials.

social media

As my first official projects in a student leadership role, designing for social media taught me valuable lessons about hierarchy, visibility, and legibility in graphic design. Since there were no set design guidelines, I took this opportunity to experiment with different styles, exploring what worked best for engagement while also shaping my own identity as a designer. Through this role, I gained hands-on experience with Adobe software—skills that I continued to refine throughout my time as a student and now carry into my professional career.

responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to align marketing efforts with team goals and events.

  • Develop social media strategies to increase engagement and recruitment.

  • Manage all social media accounts by creating engaging posts, stories, and event announcements.

  • Schedule posts to maintain consistent communication with followers and supporters.

  • Coordinate with other departments to organize events, secure photographers, and arrange interviews to enhance the team's visibility and engagement.

  • Engage with fans and followers to foster a strong community by answering questions, expressing appreciation, and building connections.

achievements

  • Increased Instagram followers by 40% over two seasons.

  • Increased post engagement with interactive content such as polls, Q&A sessions, and behind-the-scenes updates.

  • Produced and scheduled 100+ posts across all social media.

  • Created Instagram Story highlights that became the account’s most-viewed content, providing followers with easy access behind the scenes, key team updates, and events.

  • Raised $14,000 for team travel and equipment expenses by promoting fundraising events and strategic outreach.

  • Connected with a sports photographer via Instagram, providing the team with high-quality action shots that were later used to enhance social media content and promotional materials.

recruitment

As a program that started in 2018, the pandemic made it incredibly difficult, if not impossible for the club to recruit new members. Even post-pandemic, the club struggled to recruit and retain members, which is why recruitment was a key focus of my role.

With no set recruitment strategy in place, I took the initiative to organize tabling events, coordinate with the Club Sports Department, and create engaging materials to attract new players. Through this experience, I was able to develop skills in event coordination, outreach, and strategic communication.

responsibilities

  • Work with coaches and team leadership to gather insights for recruitment materials, ensuring they reflect the team’s culture and goals.

  • Coordinate with Club Sports administrators to secure time slots & space for the team’s recruiting station.

  • Organize scheduling for team members to table at key times.

  • Create recruitment materials for tabling events such as flyers, posters, & merch.

  • Promote recruitment efforts on social media as well as in-person around campus.

  • Engage with potential recruits via direct messages (DMs), answering questions and providing information.

  • Organize recruitment events beyond tabling to further engage new recruits.

  • Maintain a list of potential recruits and follow up with them after initial contact.

achievements

  • Collaborated with the leadership team to align marketing strategies with recruitment goals, leading to two record-breaking seasons with the highest number of new players joining.

  • Retained an average of 65-80% of recruited players by providing consistent access to information and proactively following up to ensure they felt supported and engaged.

  • Coordinated team-bonding events such as Galentines, movie nights, group study sessions, and other hangouts.

  • Organized events to connect with other Club Sports teams, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.

  • Invited the school’s newspaper to interview select players, allowing them to share their personal experiences and serve as ambassadors for the club, helping to raise awareness and attract new members.
